Magic Art Classes

Join us for a wide variety of creative and fun art classes for children 4-13 years old. Over the series of classes, children will learn painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, textile art, graphic art, paper making, art history, and more. Magic of Children in the Arts is launching affordable Saturday art lessons from October 2017- June 2018 that includes participation in the yearly children's art show. Class space is limited. Book early to reserve your spot.

The classes run in 4 week sessions in two age groups:

Art Sprouts for ages 4-7 years. Saturdays: 10:00am-11:30am. Cost $45 (per 4 week session. Materials included).

Art Jam for ages 8-13 years. Saturdays: 1:00pm-3:00pm. Cost $65 (per 4 week session. Materials included).

Session 1: October 21- November 11, 2017

Art Sprouts age 4-7yrs

Week 1- COLOUR WHEEL PIN WHEELS

Build your colour wheels! Students will learn about kinetic art, how it works and colour theory using the colour wheel. Emphasis will be on primary/secondary and complimentary colours, colour mixing and structure building (see samples below).

Week 2- CARVED PASTEL DRAWINGS

Shape it! Design it! Layer it! Pattern it! Carve it! Students will create bold and colourful graphic illustrations with a unique technique of layering heavy colour and carving with tools. Emphasis will be on geometric shapes, line, movement, pattern, and the complimentary/primary and secondary colours. Great for little hands to develop small motor hand skills (see samples below).

Week 3- KILN FIRED POCKET CREATURES

Create your own 'Pocket Pal Creature'. Artists will learn about different types of clay, what a kiln is and how it works while creating personalized miniature creatures. Emphasis will be on hand building, detail and texture (see samples below).

Week 4- SANDRA SILBERZWEIG INSPIRED SOFT PASTEL PORTRAITS

Create Magical Faces! Students will learn about Toronto-based artist Sandra Silberzweig and her abstract portraits inspired by bright bold colour, Mexican folk art and abstract design.  Focus will be on what a portrait is, abstract contour line drawing, repetition of line/pattern, warm and cool colours exploration, and self expression (see samples below).

Week 1- KILN FIRED CLAY JEWELLERY

Make your own personalized clay jewellery with stoneware clay. Artists will learn about different types of clay and their uses and how to “fire” clay in a kiln. Emphasis will be on proper clay hand building techniques including how to create a clay pendant and bead and tube bail pendant (see samples below).

Week 2- MYLAR MANDALA “SUN CATCHERS”

Shapes rule the world! Students will learn about radial design (circle, pie and quadrant) and simple shapes/symbols and how they are used throughout history to convey a message. Ex. pictograms, letters and contemporary symbols. Emphasis will be on pattern, repetition and painting a mandala on frosted mylar using personalized symbols that represent the artist (see samples below).

Week 3- “CLAY” TILE PRINTS

Design it! Carve it! Print it! Artists will learn about lino-cut printmaking and the importance of design in defining cultural iconic artistic styles that include clay tile designs from around the world. Emphasis will be on pattern, repetition and symmetry to create a larger “puzzle” like printed design (see samples below).

Week 4-NEGATIVE PAINTING

Paint what is NOT there?? Students will learn about positive and negative space and how it can be used to create a successful composition in a painting. Emphasis will be on using negative painting to establish the subject of their painting by painting around their object (see samples below).

Textile Art

Join local artist Sabrina Parrish for four weeks of exciting art classes! Artists will learn the basics of silkscreen printing on T-shirts and poster boards, weaving with several different materials and Shibori Dying (Tie-Die) with natural indigo. Make new friends in a our creative environment.

Session 3: January 6 - 27, 2018

Week 1- Georgia O'Keefe Inspired Watercolour Painting

Get your magnifying glass out! Students will learn about the works of Georgia O’Keefe and how she created abstract paintings by “cropping” her pictures to give a macro up close view of her subject matter only to create their own macro watercolour painting of their own subject matter. Emphasis on process of macro drawing, cropping and watercolour washes/layering (see samples below).

Week 2- GYOTAKU PRINTING

Experience Japanese art making! Students will learn about the traditional art of Japanese Gyotaku printmaking – Gyo meaning “fish” and taku meaning “rubbing”.  Emphasis will be on creating multiple fish prints and combining them with a pastel illustration to create a mixed media piece of art (see samples below).

Week 3- CLAY SLAB MONSTERS

Monster Magic! Artists will learn about types of clay and the variety of ways to work with clay. Students will focus on “slab” work (rolling clay into sheets to cut apart and assemble) and how to hand build a monster of their choice (see samples below).

Week 4- MONOPRINTING

Create One of a Kind Art prints. Students will learn how to “pull” a one-time print by rolling ink onto plexiglass and carving pictures/patterns into ink. Emphasis will be on layering of patterns and colours to create a dynamic print and what an artist’s proof and limited edition are (see samples below).

Week 1&2- TOPOGRAPHIC PAPER RELIEF SCULPTURES

Transform Maps of the world! Learn about two-dimensional “relief” sculpture, organic shapes and topographic maps. Using maps as reference, they will draw and create a simplified 2-D relief paper sculpture. Emphasis on warm/cool colours, organic shapes, size variation, and repetition (see samples below).

Week 3&4- NAME SCULPTURES

What is YOUR name? Create a dynamic whimsical sculpture using the letters of your name. Emphasis will be on three-dimensional forms, colour, pattern, movement.....and FUN! (see samples below).

Paper Art

Session 5: April 14 - May 5, 2018

Week 1- MODIGLIANI INSPIRED PORTRAITS

Explore Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, known for his distinctive portraits painted with elongated faces and figures. Emphasis will be on characteristics of a Modigliani painting, blending and layering of soft pastels and contrasting warm and cool colours (see samples below).

Week 2- ZANY ZEBRA COLLAGE

Have fun with pattern play while exploring cut and paste collage creating zany zebra creations. Emphasis will be on animal figure drawing, patterns and colour variation (see samples below).

Week 3- IMAGINARY “POP UP” CITIES

Create an amazing imaginary city using 2-D relief design to create a pop up effect. Emphasis will be on contour drawing with watercolour and creating dimension with background and foreground combined with a floating relief technique (see samples below).

Weeks 4- ANDY GOLDSWORTHY INSPIRED EARTH ART

Make 'Earth Art' and create a nature inspired sculpture based on work by artist Andy Goldsworthy with emphasis on colour, pattern, line and movement (see samples below).

Weeks 1&2- 3-D COLOUR WHEEL

Blend it! Design it! Build it! Students will learn colour theory using the colour wheel and about three-dimensional shape and sculpture. Emphasis will be on assembling sculpture according to proper placement of colour on a colour wheel.

Weeks 3&4- NYLON WIRE SCULPTURE

Mix it up! Sculpt, Paint, Transform! Students will learn about three-dimensional design and sculpture and how to manipulate wire and a variety of materials to create a sculpture using nylon, wire, wood, and paint. Emphasis will be on movement, pattern and colour.
